The Land Transport Authority will be widening
a stretch of Upper Bukit Timah Road, from Old Jurong Road to Gombak Drive, from
the current dual two-lane to a dual three-lane carriageway. The widening works,
when completed, will ease traffic congestion along this stretch of Upper Bukit
Timah Road.
Together with the widening project, we will
carry out junction improvement works at Hillview Road and Dairy Farm Road. We
will also build a new pedestrian overhead bridge, bus bays, roadside drain,
culvert and other road structures for the benefit of the motorists and
pedestrians.
Improving Traffic Flow
Currently, motorists experience traffic
congestion along Upper Bukit Timah Road, when they head towards the city during
the morning peak hours, or when they travel towards Woodlands during the evening
peak hours. Long queues are formed in each direction at the junction of Hillview
Road and Dairy Farm Road during the peak periods. Motorists will be able to
enjoy smoother journeys along the Upper Bukit Timah corridor when these widening
works are completed.
The increase in road capacity will also cater
to the future increase in traffic demand from the growing developments in the
Choa Chu Kang, Bukit Panjang, Hillview and Clementi areas.
Some trees will be affected by the widening
works but none of these are heritage trees. They are mostly common species such
as Angsana, Yellow Flame and Rain Trees. These trees will be removed in stages.
About four hundred new trees will be planted by the time the project completes.
LTA is working closely with the National Parks Board to carry out planting and
landscaping works progressively.

About Upper Bukit Timah Road
The upgrading of Upper Bukit Timah Road
commenced in November 1999. Phase One of the project saw the construction of a
vehicular underpass and flyover at Jalan Anak Bukit, which was completed in
March 2003. With the opening of the underpass and flyover, motorists enjoy an
uninterrupted travel from Upper Bukit Timah Road towards Clementi Road, via
Jalan Anak Bukit, and vice versa.
Phase Two of the project involves the widening of Upper Bukit
Timah Road, from Old Jurong Road to Gombak Drive. The S$7.9 million contract has
been awarded to Feng Ming Construction Pte Ltd. Works have started and are
scheduled to complete by end 2005.
