Completion Of West Coast Highway
And Upgraded Roads To Jalan Buroh

West Coast Highway Extension Opens To Traffic

The Land Transport Authority (LTA) is pleased to announce the completion of the West Coast Highway and upgraded roads to Jalan Buroh. The West Coast Highway extension, from Telok Blangah Street 31 to the West Coast Highway, will be opened to traffic from Sunday, 26 March 2006 at 10.00am.

The upgrading works for this 20-km stretch of roads from Keppel Road to Jalan Buroh commenced in 1998 and were carried out in stages. Sections of the roads have been opened to traffic progressively since 2002. These include the Keppel Road/Ayer Rajah Expressway (AYE) interchange, the viaduct along Telok Blangah Road, the widening of West Coast Highway and Jalan Buroh, as well as the flyovers at Penjuru Road and Jurong Pier Road interchanges.

Please see attached map for the completed road projects along the south-western corridor.

With the opening of the West Coast Highway extension, motorists will enjoy a smooth driving experience along the south-western corridor, as they no longer need to stop at traffic light junctions along the way. The benefit for motorists is significant time savings - by as much as 15 minutes for those going from Keppel Road to Jalan Buroh!

Minister for Transport, Mr Yeo Cheow Tong graced the ceremony to mark the completion of the West Coast Highway and upgraded roads to Jalan Buroh this morning. A 2.4-km charity fun walk was also part of the programme to allow members of the public the rare opportunity to walk on the completed stretch of the West Coast Highway extension before it is opened for use. Proceeds from the walk went to LTA's adopted charity, the Muscular Dystrophy Association of Singapore (MDAS).

West Coast Highway Extension

The 5-km West Coast Highway extension is the longest viaduct in Singapore and the last segment of LTA's road upgrading plans for the south-western corridor. The project involves the construction of a viaduct along the centre median of Telok Blangah Road and Pasir Panjang Road, and was carried out in two phases.

Phase 1 consists of the construction of a viaduct along the centre median of Telok Blangah Road, from Kampong Bahru Road to Telok Blangah Street 31. The 2.4-km dual three-lane carriageway was opened to traffic on 27 April 2002.

Phase 2 involves the extension of the viaduct by another 2.6km along the centre median of Telok Blangah Road and Pasir Panjang Road to West Coast Highway.

With the completion of Phase 2 of the project, motorists can save on travelling time without having to stop at the heavy traffic junctions at Kampong Bahru Road, Seah Im Road, Henderson Road, Alexandra Road and South Buona Vista Road.

Upgrading of Jalan Buroh

The upgrading of Jalan Buroh commenced in 2001 and involves the widening of Jalan Buroh, from West Coast Highway to Jurong Pier Road, to a dual four-lane carriageway, with construction of flyovers at Jurong Pier Road and the Jalan Buroh/Penjuru Road interchange, and reconstruction of bridges across the Jurong and Pandan Rivers. West Coast Road, from West Coast Way to Jurong Town Hall, was also widened. In addition, new commuter facilities including pedestrian overhead bridges, bus shelters and footpaths were built to serve residents, schools and factories in the vicinity.

Coupled with the West Coast Highway extension, the two projects will help improve the capacity of the arterial road system in the south-western part of Singapore. The accessibility between the PSA container ports and the ongoing industrial developments in Tuas and Jurong areas will also be greatly enhanced.
