1. Motorists can soon look forward to
getting up-to-date and frequent traffic news over the radio in a timely,
accurate and comprehensive manner when the Land Transport Authority (LTA) rolls
out its traffic news on the airwaves on 28 October 2008 (Tuesday).
2 The LTA has procured airtime for
traffic news dissemination on four MediaCorp Pte Ltd radio stations, namely
938LIVE, Capital 95.8FM, Warna 94.2FM and Oli 96.8FM. These stations were
selected as they reach a broad demographic spectrum of listeners and for their
news-centric programming.
3. Leveraging on MediaCorp's existing
"TrafficWatch" infrastructure, "LTA Traffic News" will
broadcast traffic updates up to five times more frequently than during the
current morning and evening drive-times. Please refer to Annex A for a
comparison between the broadcast frequency of LTA Traffic News and the current
TrafficWatch.
4. The traffic updates will report on
accidents, vehicle breakdowns, obstructions and road works, as well as land
transport emergency situations.
5. The LTA hopes that this initiative
will help motorists to better plan their routes. With real-time traffic
information, motorists can opt to take alternative routes, thus reducing traffic
to the incident location, ultimately reducing congestion and cutting travel
time.
Engaging the Public More Proactively
6. The LTA also hopes to engage the
public, especially the motoring community, more actively through LTA Traffic
News. Besides traffic updates, public education messages will be aired five
times per hour per channel during peak-hours. These messages will include road
project status, road closures, road safety messages and public transport
promotion.
