1. From Tuesday, 28 October 2008, normal bus lanes will be
implemented at three locations along Bukit Panjang Road and Upper Bukit Timah
Road. Please refer to Annex A[1]
for the locations.
2. The normal bus lanes will operate during peak hours from
7.30am to 9.30am and from 5pm to 8pm on weekdays.
3. Extending the normal bus lane scheme to these three
locations is in line with the Land Transport Master Plan's objectives to enable
buses to move more quickly. As buses are more efficient carriers, with a higher
number of passengers per unit road space as compared to other vehicles, it is
necessary to give priority to buses so that more commuters reach their
destinations on time.
4. "With the increase in public transport ridership,
giving buses greater priority will mean more people will benefit with an
improved travelling experience. We are pleased with results so far and based on
our initial monitoring, we have observed bus speeds improvements by some 10 to
12% at some stretches," said LTA Chief Executive, Mr Yam Ah Mee.
5. There is now a total of 22km of full-day bus lanes and
144km of normal bus lanes since the expansion of the bus lane scheme, started in
June this year.
