Jaywalking at Bus Interchanges And Terminals

New Page 1

With effect from 14 July 2003, it will be an offence for pedestrians to walk across bus parking areas at interchanges and terminals.

Pedestrians who jaywalk at bus parking areas can be fined up to $500. They may also be charged in court, where they face up to a maximum fine of $1,000 and/or 3-months imprisonment. For the second and subsequent offences, the offenders may be liable to a maximum fine of $2,000 and/or six months jail.

This new offence was recently introduced in the Road Traffic Act, to deter jaywalking and to ensure public safety at bus interchanges and terminals. This was so as there were many accidents involving jaywalkers at bus interchanges. Over the past 3 years, there were 38 accidents, four of which were fatal.

Employees selected by bus operators are trained and empowered by the
Land Transport Authority to enforce the new rules.
