1. Young athletes visiting Singapore during the inaugural
Youth Olympic Games will get to see for themselves what public transport means
to young Singaporeans.
2. From 28 July, the Land Transport Authority (LTA) is
displaying the "Youth for Transport" competition's winning art pieces
at bus stops and on street structures including the exteriors of three Circle
Line stations: MacPherson, Mountbatten and Paya Lebar (Please refer to Annex
A for illustrations of the art pieces on the various street structures).
The competition was organised to celebrate the inaugural Youth Olympic Games
that will be held in Singapore from 14 to 26 August 2010 and the art will go on
display just in time to welcome visitors.
3. The most prominent display will be a 18m by 12m art piece
that will be featured on the six-storey high Kallang-Paya Lebar Expressway (KPE)
ventilation building off Nicoll Highway.
4. This competition attracted more than 3,800 entries. Three
professionals in the arts scene judged the entries. One judge, Dr Ian Woo, has
his works in the North East Line HarbourFront station under the "Art in
Transit" Programme by LTA (Information on the panel of judges can be found
in Annex
B).
5. Said one of the judges, Ms Karen Lim Li-Ching, "The
judges had a hard time selecting the winning entries, not just because of the
sheer numbers but also because of the terrific display of creativity."
6. "Youth are the future owners of our public transport
system, and creating art is a great way for them to share their ideas about how
transport plays such a big part in our daily lives. We were so excited to see
their talent and passion in the work they created for the upcoming Youth Olympic
Games", said Mrs Tammie Loke, Group Director for Corporate Communications,
Land Transport Authority.
7. Besides having the chance for their work become part of
street art scene, winners will also bring home attractive cash prizes.
8. The competition, which was held from 30 April to 30 Jun,
had three categories - Children, Youth and Open - with differing themes. The top
prize winners in the Children and Youth Categories will take home $1,000, while
the second and third prize winners will receive $800 and $500 respectively. The
top, second and third prize winners for the Open Category will receive $2,500,
$1,500 and $1,000 respectively. (Please refer to Annex
C for the list of the top three winners in each category)
9. The winners will be receiving their prizes from LTA's
Acting Chief Executive, Mr Lim Bok Ngam at a presentation ceremony to be held at
the LTA Auditorium on 28 July 2010.
